There is a posibility that there was no King of Hell beofre Crowley but probably if there was it would have been maybe Lucifer since He created Hell and Demons in the first place or Lilith since She was the first Demon (Queen not King however). I know you might be thinking, If that was the case then why did it take up to season six for Crowley's new status to be revealed? Well, think about it Hell was always chaotic and Im sure it went into even more chaos during the whole apocalypse business. If Lilith was the Queen of Hell and She died then there would be numerous demons etching to get their demonic paws on the throne which could have taken awhile for Crowley to get there. There could have been a vote in Hell or maybe Crowley, as Lilith's right hand man, inherited the throne. After all we have to remember that Crowley was being hunted during season five so voting is out of the question and he probably didn't fight his way through the masses or at least not himself. Crowly was a Crossroads Demon, king infact which means He was a trickster. Kind of like the demonic version of Gabriel/The Trickster. Ascending to the Throne would have only boosted his mojo and no Im not referring to Austin Powers, lol. He probably realized that opening the Cage would be too dangerous so He may have went in through a back door. Either way, going in the back way or front way, Im sure Michael and Lucifer were too busy taking there rage out on Sam's soul as mentioned several times in season six, to even notice or maybe care. Well, we can't forgot that Crowley is a demon and Lucifer is an Angel not to mention that Lucifer's Cage was made specifically to hold him in. Why didn't demons with the power get him out beofre? Well, for one Lucifer is the Big Papa to all the little bears and Papa isn't kind! Second of all they probably couldn't get him out, lucifer instructed them to NOT get him out yet mostly because they all were going to wait for things to play out the way they were suppose to. Sometimes things have to be the way they are. The Cage was made a specific way which means it can't just be opened in a easy way. The seals had to be broken for it to be opened. After the Cage opened and Lucifer got hurled back into the pit we could assume that the Seals were never closed or that maybe while it was opened there was a crack made in the Cage (not litterally a crack per se) or maybe the back door was revealed. If Lilith was the Queen of Hell then She may have given Crowley Her powers and kept just enough to do what She needed to do. This whole thing may have been planned out from Season Four and none of it was mentioned.
